The guy I kidnapped last New Year’s.

December 28th, 2005

I was drunk, and I essentially did kidnap him off the sidewalk. Then I proceeded to drag my new pal to a crapload of other bars after that, along with my friends. I really honestly think he just up and left his friends in the process, too. I don’t remember. Really, in retrospect it was kind of a raucous time we were all having, and a bit insane — though funny.

A year ago this week, we met on a crowded Ludlow Street (by eye contact) to ring in the rest of a New Years Eve 2005 that was only a few hours old. That was my first interaction of the new year, and the next 300 days were really good to me. So I wanted to be among the first to wish you a Happy 2006. I hope that 2005 has been as good to you as it was to me. Thanks for helping me get it started.

Wow. That is the sweetest thing. Honestly, we haven’t communicated with each other since then, that’s just a pleasant surprise.

After I read that, I kept thinking of the funny way I had be-friended him. We basically stared each other down in front of a bar on the Lower East Side before we each shrugged off the tragic New York hipness to break the ice and actually say “hi” to another human being that wasn’t part of our normal safety net.

Uh, OK — well it might not’ve been “hi” technically. Honestly, I have no idea. I was pretty loaded.

Admittedly, I have been in a really bad funk since I got to New York. That made my day.
